Can I use the high speed on thick fabric?

The high setting is meant for light fabric like cotton and similar material. Thick fabric or leather can stall the motor or bend the needle at high speed. Use the low setting and let the machine feed at its own pace.

Does dual speed mean I can adjust the speed continuously?

No. Dual speed gives you two fixed rates: high and low. There is no dial or pedal range between them. If you want continuous control, look for a machine with a foot pedal that varies motor speed.

Is the low speed slow enough for a beginner?

Yes. The low setting is slow enough to place stitches one at a time on curves and corners. That is the main reason beginners pick a dual speed machine over a single speed one.

Where is the speed switch located?

It is a physical switch or slider on the machine body, usually near the power button. You set it before you start sewing. It is not buried in a screen menu.

What dual speed changes at the needle

Dual speed gives you two fixed rates instead of one continuous range. The low setting runs slow enough to place each stitch by hand, which matters on curves, corners, and short seams. The high setting covers straight runs faster so you are not sitting at the machine all afternoon.

On these machines the switch is a physical control, not a screen menu. You flip or slide it before you start sewing, and the motor holds that rate under light fabric loads. It is a convenience feature, not a stitch quality feature: the stitch length and width stay where you set them.

How the two speeds are built and where they stop

The speed selector sits on the body near the power switch on most of these units. It toggles between two motor voltages or two gear ratios, depending on the model. The low setting is the one beginners actually use; the high setting is for long straight seams on cotton and similar light fabric.

Dual speed does not mean variable speed. You cannot dial in a rate between the two. If you need to feather the pedal for mid-range control, a machine with a foot pedal and a continuous speed range is the better fit. Dual speed is for people who want a clear slow mode and a clear fast mode and nothing in between.
